The ‘Massassi Outpost on the fourth moon of Yavin’: Tikal, Guatemala

seen toward the end of the movie, is the giant Mayan temple complex at Tikal, Guatemala.

The spectacular ruins, 2,500 years old and set in the 222-square-mile rainforest of the Tikal National Park

Filming at iconic world heritage sites is something of a Star Wars tradition. The Mayan ruins of Tikal in Guatemala became the rebel base Yavin 4 in “Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.” The interior shots were all filmed in a Lucas Film studio.
