Godless: Season 1 (2017) Filming Locations – Netflix Original

Godless is a new Netflix TV Show that was first globally premiered with 7 episodes on November 22nd, 2017 and was filmed all over New Mexico. Specifically, most of this show was reportedly produced in Santa Fe, New Mexico and filming started sometime in September, 2016. The show’s premise is about an outlaw in the Western days who embarks on a journey in tracking down a traitor but instead finds a mining town called La Belle, New Mexico, which is found to be governed by mostly women. With a star-studded cast such as Jeff Daniels and Michelle Dockery, the series is already receiving rave reviews and it’s just getting started.

Godless is currently shooting at Santa Fe Studios, Santa Fe, New Mexico. In the series, you will notice the town run by women is called La Belle, New Mexico, which is a real ghost town located in NM. However, the series was not filmed in this real ghost town but is just named after it.

Where is La Belle, New Mexico located?

The city of La Belle, New Mexico is an actual town located in New Mexico and was in fact a mining town in the 1890s during the gold rush, but was abandoned in the early 20th century due to it’s low-grade gold ore. You might be asking: “Is this where the show is filmed?” and the answer is no, not at all. The show is actually being done in Santa Fe, New Mexico and has many of the same characteristics as this town.

As for inspiration on creating a city called La Belle and the idea behind it, the show’s creator Scott Frank actually based the show off of a town called Dawson, New Mexico, which suffered two of the most devastating mining disasters in American history, according to an interview with Frank in Variety.
